Russian proposals for a ceasefire are a new hybrid tactic by the Kremlin. The West must continue to put pressure on Russia, according to Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha during the Government Q&A session in the Verkhovna Rada.

"We are now witnessing a new hybrid tactic of Kremlin manipulation, as they try to push on us an Easter or Victory Day ceasefire," Sybiha said.

According to the minister, the West is increasingly realizing that Russia’s ceasefire proposals are nothing but manipulation and a mockery of the peaceful efforts of the United States and other partners.

"We must increase pressure on Moscow to force it into peace. Military deterrence and economic pressure are capable of achieving this and preventing further aggression," Sybiha emphasized.

Russian ceasefires

Recently, the Kremlin has stepped up its rhetoric about Russia’s alleged readiness for direct negotiations with Ukraine. In particular, Moscow has claimed it is open to dialogue with the Ukrainian side “without preconditions.”

At the same time, over the past few months, Russia has repeatedly proposed so-called ceasefires along the front line, but has never once abided by its own declarations. On April 28, President Vladimir Putin announced a temporary ceasefire from May 8 to 11, citing "humanitarian reasons." However, Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD) emphasized that the real motives behind such moves are the Kremlin’s concerns about holding the Victory Day parade and its lack of confidence in its own air defense systems.
