Another Italian city tightens restrictions for tourists: What is known
The Italian city of Florence has tightened restrictions on tourists, banning key lockboxes and tour guides' loudspeakers, CNN reports.
Florence has long attracted visitors with its stunning architecture and art.
However, to combat overtourism, the city is implementing a series of measures. Among the new restrictions are bans on key lockboxes used by short-term rental owners. These lockboxes have recently become targets of vandalism, with frustrated locals marking them with red Xs.
Restrictions will also apply to "atypical vehicles," such as golf carts, increasingly popular among tour guides for transporting visitors in areas with limited car traffic.
The decree further prohibits the use of amplifiers and loudspeakers by tour guides.
The report highlights that Florence, located in Tuscany, has been a top destination for travelers for years. But, like many other places in Italy, it has seen a sharp increase in tourists in recent years, sparking backlash from residents.
The new measures come as the Italian government hosts a G7 tourism ministers' meeting in Florence.
Notably, Venice recently implemented its own set of rules imposing various restrictions on tourists and tour guides.
Earlier, Italy also introduced stricter regulations for vacationers and tourists, including bans on night swimming, loud music, and selfies.
