Android turns 18 — the operating system that started with the HTC Dream smartphone has become the foundation of the modern mobile world. From Android 1.0 in 2008, the platform has grown to power billions of devices and a vast app ecosystem.

From the first touchscreen smartphone to a global platform
The first Android-powered smartphone, also known as the T-Mobile G1, was very different from today’s gadgets. It featured a slide-out physical keyboard, a trackball and a small touchscreen.
However, the main idea behind the HTC Dream was flexibility: the device was seen as a pocket computer that anyone could customize to suit their own needs.
The availability of an app store immediately opened up new opportunities for developers.
An important step in the platform’s expansion was its open model.
Smartphone manufacturers gained the ability to change the interface, add their own features, and adapt the system for devices in different price categories.
This made it possible to quickly fill the market with gadgets from many brands, although it also caused fragmentation and delays in the release of updates.

The tradition of sweet names, interface development and new features
For a long time, each major version of Android was given the name of a dessert in alphabetical order — from Cupcake to Pie.

After 18 years of development, the platform continues to remain one of the major driving forces in the world of technology.
