The United States has formally invited Poland to take part in the next summit of the Group of Twenty, which will take place in Miami. Washington noted that the Polish economy has now entered the ranks of the world’s twenty largest, according to Notes from Poland.

The United States has officially invited Poland to take part in the next Group of Twenty summit, which will be held in Miami. Washington noted that the Polish economy is now among the world’s twenty largest.

In a statement titled "America welcomes a new G20", US Secretary of State Marko Rubio announced that Poland will participate in the summit as a guest. He emphasized that Poland, once behind the Iron Curtain and now one of the world’s top twenty economies, is joining the format to take what he described as its rightful place. Rubio also argued that Poland’s economic success reflects the benefits of pursuing development and partnership with the United States and with us businesses.

Criticism of South Africa and political context

Rubio used the same statement to criticize South Africa, which the Trump administration accuses of committing genocide against white citizens. According to him, South Africa will not be invited to the upcoming summit.

Poland's long-standing goal

Warsaw has been actively seeking a seat at the Group of Twenty, particularly after the country’s economy surpassed 1 trillion dollars this year and rose to twentieth place globally. Polish foreign minister Radoslaw Sikorski earlier said he had discussed Poland’s participation in the format with us officials.

Background

Donald Trump intends to turn the next G20 summit into an invitation-only event, which would break with established rules. On 26 November, he stated that South Africa will not receive an invitation to the Miami summit. The US leader also claimed that after the previous G20 meeting, South Africa refused to transfer the presidency to the senior representative of the us embassy present at the closing ceremony.
