Always do this before using new towel: Crucial step for safety

A new towel may seem perfectly clean, but is it really safe for your skin without washing? Traces from production, transportation, and dozens of hands can remain on the fabric, according to Real Simple.
Why you should wash new towels
Towels should always be washed before first use. New towels are coated with finishing agents that make them soft, but this actually reduces their absorbency.
The first wash removes this layer so the fibers can fully function. This helps towels better absorb moisture and perform their intended function.
If you skip the first wash, you may notice that the towel absorbs water poorly; it may simply repel moisture from your skin instead of absorbing it effectively.
Additionally, residues of chemicals and dyes can get on your skin, potentially irritating.
How to wash towels to keep them fluffy
Use warm water and skip fabric softener
Warm water (40–60 °C / 104–140 °F) helps remove dirt, sweat, and bacteria. Do not use fabric softener, as it forms a thin layer on the fibers, causing towels to:
- absorb water less effectively
- develop unpleasant odors faster
Use regular laundry detergent or gel.
Vinegar
When washing a new towel, you can add one cup of vinegar instead of detergent. It is acidic enough to break down silicone coatings and other chemical residues, remove existing odors, and fix colors.
Care instructions
Towels are often made of cotton or blended fabrics. Incorrect temperature or washing settings can:
- reduce softness
- lower absorbency
- cause shrinkage
Washing at too high a temperature or using harsh detergents can:
- wear out fibers faster
- make towels stiff and thin
