Aid to Ukraine may decrease regardless of US election results
After more than 1,000 days of fierce fighting, the US elections are becoming a turning point for Ukraine. And regardless of the results, aid to the country may be reduced, reports Bloomberg.
Officials in Kyiv and Europe are concerned that Donald Trump's victory could force Ukraine into a painful war settlement that would allow Russian leader Vladimir Putin to consolidate his power in the country.
And while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has vowed to continue the fight, the harsh reality is that Ukraine's depleted military is heavily dependent on US aid. In particular, some of Ukraine's allies have already started talking about how the war could end.
If Trump, who has said he will “settle” the conflict before taking office and who has also threatened to cut off aid, wins, Ukraine's options will be sharply reduced.
But even if Kamala Harris wins, according to Western officials who spoke on condition of anonymity, the United States will likely have a hard time keeping significant financial support through Congress.
On Friday, October 25, ten days before the US presidential election, Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump tied in terms of support and had equal chances of winning. In particular, we are talking about seven key so-called swing states.
