AI unravels centuries-old enigma: Raphael's famous masterpiece possibly decoded
The mystery surrounding Raphael's masterpiece Madonna of the Rose, which has been under discussion, may have been successfully unraveled with the help of an artificial intelligence algorithm developed in Bradford, reports the British newspaper The Guardian.
The image featuring the Virgin Mary, Christ, John the Baptist, and Saint Joseph is considered a masterpiece that has piqued the interest of art connoisseurs and experts for centuries. The intrigue stemmed from doubts that emerged in the 19th century regarding its authorship.
Initially attributed to Raphael, some art historians later speculated that the figure of Joseph couldn't have been the work of the Italian artist.
Debates also surrounded the lower part of the painting, as some believed it was created by a different artist. To resolve this, artificial intelligence was employed. A professor from the University of Bradford developed an algorithm used in this investigation.
The AI concluded that most of the painting belonged to Raphael, but Joseph's face was painted by another artist. According to the artificial intelligence algorithm, the lower part of the artwork also "most likely" belonged to Raphael.
The AI algorithm previously analyzed 49 other works by this artist and was able to recognize genuine works with 98% accuracy. These results became part of a new article published in the journal Heritage Science.
The mystery surrounding Raphael's painting Madonna of the Rose has likely been deciphered.
Additionally, in Italy, a treasure trove of coins and precious stones was found at the site of an ancient Roman settlement.
