Artificial intelligence developer Anthropic has accused the administration of US President Donald Trump of illegal actions after the company was deemed a threat to national security and attempts were made to deprive it of its work with the Pentagon, The Wall Street Journal reports.
Anthropic, the American company that developed the Claude AI models, has filed a lawsuit against the administration of US President Donald Trump, demanding that the decision to assign it supply-chain risk status and terminate federal contracts be overturned.
In the complaint, the company claims that the US government's actions are beyond its authority and constitute retaliation for refusing to agree to the use of AI with the Department of Defense.
Shortly after the lawsuit was filed, 37 researchers from OpenAI and Google spoke out in support of Anthropic, noting that such measures could affect the US's competitiveness in artificial intelligence. Among them is Jeff Dean from Google DeepMind.
Anthropic insists that its AI tools are not used for mass surveillance or autonomous weapons and has demanded official guarantees when working with the Pentagon. The administration claims that the company's refusal to provide AI for all legitimate scenarios poses a threat to national security and that its tools are critical to the military's operations.
The designation of supply-chain risk is usually applied to foreign adversaries, not American companies, which has drawn sharp criticism from the company. Anthropic also said that Trump did not follow proper procedures when canceling the contract.
The company has asked the federal appeals court in Washington to review the Pentagon's decision formally. Anthropic's contract with the Department of Defense is estimated to be worth up to $200 million. Investors and partners, including Microsoft and Google, have said they will continue to work with the company on commercial projects outside the Pentagon.
Anthropic positions itself as a leader in responsible AI development, and the conflict with the Trump administration highlights the growing tension surrounding the use of artificial intelligence technologies in the US defense sector.
Recently, an American court ruled against the US President. The lawsuit was related to tariffs that Trump actively imposed on many countries.
Trump is a figure who often faces lawsuits. For example, in another case, the Hennepin County District Attorney's Office and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Investigation sued the US president's administration.
This was done to prevent the falsification and destruction of evidence in the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti by an ICE agent.
