After Putin summit: Trump ready to give Ukraine direct security guarantees

US President Donald Trump told European leaders that he is ready to provide Ukraine with direct security guarantees, The Wall Street Journal reports.
According to people familiar with the content of the conversation, Trump told European leaders during a phone call from aboard Air Force One that he is more ready than ever to provide Ukraine with direct security guarantees.
According to anonymous sources, the nature of potential US involvement in ensuring a war-ending agreement was not specified during the conversation, and the White House has still made no public statements regarding security guarantees.
European leaders who spoke with Trump later said that they “welcome President Trump’s statement on the US readiness to provide security guarantees.”
They also warned that they are prepared to increase sanctions and military pressure on Russia until the Kremlin stops hostilities.
The leaders of the UK, France, Germany, Finland, Italy, and the European Union also stressed that Russia “cannot veto Ukraine’s path to the EU and NATO.”
Trump and Putin meeting
Yesterday, August 15, a meeting took place between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin at a military base in Anchorage, Alaska.
The negotiations were held in a three-on-three format and lasted nearly three hours. On the American side, Trump was joined by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff; on the Russian side were Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov.
After the talks, the leaders held a joint press conference, but journalists were not given the opportunity to ask questions. Trump said that no agreements on Ukraine were reached, but allegedly some progress was observed.
Europe has already reacted to the Trump-Putin meeting, expressing mixed assessments of the results of the negotiations.
After the summit, Trump contacted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy by phone.
Their conversation, with the participation of European allies, lasted more than an hour and a half. RBC-Ukraine wrote who among the other participants joined this phone conference.
