Hair health depends not only on genetics and care products, but also on daily habits. An expert has named simple actions that help keep hair healthy, strong, and shiny, according to Real Simple.

Comb your hair daily

Dermatologist and MD Kristina Collins explains that beyond detangling and styling, brushing also benefits the scalp.

Brushing helps stimulate blood circulation in the scalp, supporting a healthy environment for hair growth. It also helps remove dead skin cells, excess oil, and product buildup that can accumulate over time.

Choose the right comb

It is important to use a comb that does not pull hair, such as a wide-tooth comb or a soft detangling brush.

It is best to brush hair right before shampooing to remove buildup and distribute natural scalp oils along the strands, or to comb it in the shower.

Hair is easiest to detangle when it is wet and coated with conditioner, as it reduces friction and breakage.

Apply shampoo and conditioner correctly

These two products serve different purposes and should be used differently.

Shampoo cleanses the scalp, so it should only be applied there using fingertips. It does not need to be spread along the entire length of the hair.

Lathering it in your hands is enough to clean the mid-lengths and ends. Directly applying shampoo to the ends is unnecessary, as they are the driest and most fragile part.

Conditioner should be applied only to the mid-lengths and ends unless it is specifically designed for scalp use.

Rinse with lukewarm water

Avoid washing hair with hot water, as it can damage the cuticle and strip natural oils, leaving hair more vulnerable.

Hot water may also worsen scalp irritation in people prone to dandruff, eczema, or sensitivity. A cooler final rinse can help smooth the cuticle and add shine.

Dry your hair gently

Rubbing wet hair aggressively with a towel leads to frizz, tangles, and breakage. Instead, gently blot or squeeze out excess water.

Microfiber towels are preferable because they create less friction than heavy cotton towels, reducing long-term damage.

Protect your head from the sun

UV exposure is one of the environmental stress factors that damages hair and scalp.

UV light breaks down proteins and melanin in the hair shaft, leading to dryness, brittleness, fading, and a straw-like texture.

The scalp and part line are especially exposed areas, often left unprotected, and UV radiation can cause oxidative stress and mild inflammation of the follicles.

Avoid tight hairstyles

Tight buns and ponytails should be loosened, as chronic tension can contribute to hair loss. Use soft fabric-covered or silk hair ties to reduce pulling and friction.

Tight elastics, especially those with metal parts, can gradually cause breakage and damage.

Night-time hair care

Make sure hair is fully dry before bed, as wet strands are fragile and prone to breakage. A silk or satin pillowcase is recommended to reduce friction while sleeping.
