7 ways to use steamer at home
A clothes steamer is an incredibly convenient tool for laundry that can easily smooth out clothing. However, this multifunctional device can also be used for other purposes, as high-temperature steam is an effective means of disinfecting and cleaning many household items, according to Martha Stewart website.
Remove grease in the kitchen
Hot steam is a great way to break down dried grease and oil for easy wiping. Therefore, a clothes steamer is excellent for cleaning kitchen surfaces, ovens, extractor fans, grills, and more.
For this purpose, it is recommended to fill the steamer with distilled water and hold it near the dried grease for a few seconds. Then, wipe away the dirt with a microfiber cloth.
Disinfect countertops
You can use a clothes steamer to clean non-porous countertops if its temperature can be adjusted high enough to kill bacteria and germs.
It is advised to turn on the steamer at a temperature of 122-148 degrees Fahrenheit and pass it over the countertop. Afterward, wipe the surface dry with a clean microfiber cloth.
Clean the sofa
If a sofa does not have removable covers, it can be cleaned using a clothes steamer. However, it is advisable to first vacuum the sofa to remove any debris and pre-treat stains.
Afterwards, the sofa should be steamed by passing the clothes steamer over it. If a large amount of moisture accumulates, the sofa can also be dried with a hairdryer.
However, it is important to check the sofa's care label to ensure that steaming is an approved cleaning method - for example, velvet sofas should never be steamed.
Freshen up the curtains
Steam from a steamer used on curtains can remove wrinkles and simultaneously disinfect the fabric. To better remove dirt, start by vacuuming the curtains to remove hair, dust, or dry debris - then pass the steamer along the fabric.
However, it is advised not to use this method for curtains that can only be cleaned with dry cleaning.
Clean the grout between tiles
Treating grout with steam can be quite an effective way to remove accumulated dirt and grime. To do this, direct the steamer to the grout and run the device along the line.
However, it is important to keep the steamer at a distance of 21-25 cm from the tile to avoid oversaturation with moisture. Once the dirt is lifted along with the moisture, it can be easily wiped away with a microfiber cloth.
Defrost the freezer
Cleaning a freezer can be challenging when ice accumulates on the walls and partitions. However, with careful handling, it is possible to defrost the freezer using a steamer.
First, empty the freezer as you would during a normal defrosting process. Then, use the steamer, running it from the back of the freezer to the front to expedite the process.
Clean the shower door
The steam from a steamer is suitable for cleaning glass without streaks and for disinfecting shower door panels.
To do this, it is advised to first clean the doors as usual, and then treat the surface with steam and wipe off excess moisture with a microfiber cloth. Just make sure that when using the steamer on glass, you use distilled water to avoid streaks and water residue.
