Menopause is often associated with hot flashes, mood swings, and insomnia. However, experts warn that hormonal changes can trigger many more symptoms that many women may not even realize are linked to menopause.

More than half of women experience a range of symptoms during menopause, reports the Daily Express.

Feeling of “bugs under the skin”

According to nutritionist Ella Kaur from the company DR.VEGAN, research shows that more than half of women going through menopause experience around ten different symptoms. Some of them are quite unusual and often go unnoticed.

One surprising symptom is formication — a sensation as if insects are crawling on or under the skin.

Experts estimate that about one in five women experiences this during menopause. In fact, it is a tactile hallucination that occurs without a physical cause and may be accompanied by itching.

Burning or tingling tongue

A drop in estrogen levels can affect the nerve endings around the taste receptors.

Because of this, some women may experience burning, tingling, or even a metallic taste in the mouth. Dryness or irritation of the oral mucosa may also occur.

Problems with spatial orientation

Some women during menopause notice changes in spatial perception.

For example, it may become harder to judge distances, there may be more accidental bumps into objects, or mistakes while walking up or down stairs. This may be linked to reduced concentration and dry eyes.

Changes in body odor

Hormonal changes can also affect body odor.

During hot flashes and night sweats, sweating increases, and the interaction of sweat with bacteria on the skin can alter body odor. In addition, a drop in estrogen levels affects the balance of microflora, which can also change the smell of bodily secretions.

Ringing or noise in the ears

Around 20% of women during menopause experience tinnitus — a condition in which a person hears ringing, buzzing, or humming without any external source of sound.

Sometimes this symptom is mild, but in some cases it can interfere with everyday life.

Sensation of “electric shocks” in the body

Another lesser-known symptom may be brief sensations similar to an electric shock.

These impulses often occur right before or during hot flashes. It is believed they are linked to changes in how the nervous system functions due to hormonal fluctuations.

Gum problems

A drop in estrogen levels can also affect oral health.

Because of dry mouth, the amount of saliva decreases, which normally helps clean bacteria from the teeth. As a result, the risk of gum inflammation and tooth decay increases. Many women during this period also notice bleeding gums or increased tooth sensitivity.

Why it is important to know about these symptoms

Experts emphasize that many women do not associate unusual changes in their bodies with menopause.

That is why doctors advise paying close attention to your well-being and consulting specialists if symptoms become uncomfortable. Timely medical advice can help find the right support — from lifestyle changes to medical recommendations.
