A recent study has shown that a diet high in ultra-processed foods is linked to 32 different health parameters, including mortality, cancer, and impacts on both physical and mental health. Daily Express reports on which foods to avoid.

What to know about ultra-processed foods

Dr. Scott has reported that ultra-processed foods lack the nutritional value of whole foods. They contain less fiber, protein, vitamins, antioxidants, and polyphenols.

He warned that these snacks are typically filled with sugar-laden jams, saturated fats, and salt, increasing their calorie content. This contributes to fat accumulation, insulin resistance, obesity, and inflammation. All these factors are independently associated with an increased risk of cancer, including colorectal and breast cancer.

Specifically, it has been found that sweeteners not related to sugar, emulsifiers, and nitrates/nitrites alter the gut microbiome, which may play a role in the development of colorectal cancer. Emulsifiers, often found in treats like cakes and pastries, are notoriously harmful to the gut.

Foods that harm the body

Although completely eliminating ultra-processed foods might seem challenging, Dr. Scott recommends replacing certain items with healthier alternatives.

According to the doctor, seven types of food that pose the highest risk are ready meals, chips, low-quality sausages, processed meats, ice cream, bread, and mayonnaise.

He cautioned that such foods, which often contain emulsifiers and added nitrates/nitrites, can damage your health when consumed in large quantities.

"These substances essentially act as detergents and are added to foods to prevent the separation of fat and water components. Unfortunately, they also destroy the protective mucous layer covering the intestinal wall. This mucous layer acts as a barrier between the intestinal lining cells and the bacteria, fungi, and viruses living in the gut (the microbiome)," he said.

Direct contact between the intestinal lining and the microbiome can trigger inflammation and create an environment conducive to the development of colorectal cancer.
