Support for the sanctions policy in the US has reached a new level. Most Americans want sanctions against countries that help Russia wage war against Ukraine, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll.

Survey results

According to the survey, 62% of respondents support the imposition of sanctions on Russia's trading allies. US President Donald Trump has partially supported this strategy and threatened to extend it to China.

In recent weeks, Trump has been actively negotiating, including a meeting with Vladimir Putin in Alaska. However, he has not yet achieved his main goal of ending the war, even though he promised to do so on his first day in office.

Trump has said he would like to receive the Nobel Peace Prize and has already imposed secondary sanctions in the form of a 25% tariff against India for continuing to buy Russian oil, the Kremlin's main source of funding for the war against Ukraine.

Pressure on Moscow's partners

The US President also threatened to impose tough tariffs on China, the largest buyer of Russian oil. Türkiye, the UAE, and other countries that cooperate with Moscow may also face restrictions.

In this way, Trump is seeking to increase pressure on the Kremlin to force it to agree to a ceasefire.

Support among parties

The poll showed that 76% of Republican Party supporters backed sanctions against Russia's partners. Among Democrats, 58% supported this strategy.

The poll surveyed 1,022 American adults across the country. The margin of error was 3 percentage points for all respondents and 6 points for Republicans and Democrats.

The US has provided the most support to Ukraine since Russia's invasion in February 2022. However, under Donald Trump, the US effectively rolled back its aid.

In August 2025, 27% of Americans consider Ukraine an ally, and 38% consider it a friendly country. Only 12% consider Ukraine an unfriendly country, and 4% consider it hostile.

In contrast, 2% of respondents consider Russia an ally, and 9% consider it a friendly country. Meanwhile, 28% consider Russia an unfriendly country, and 46% consider it hostile.
