Morning habits can affect not only mood and productivity, but also inflammation levels in the body — one of the key factors in the development of chronic diseases. Here’s what is beneficial to do in the morning, according to Eating Well.

Drink water

A study in eBioMedicine notes that the body loses fluid during sleep, so waking up slightly dehydrated is normal.

Drinking a glass of water in the morning is a simple way to restore fluid balance and support overall health. Proper hydration is linked to longevity, a reduced risk of chronic diseases, and overall well-being.

At the same time, dehydration is associated with higher levels of inflammation in the body. Over time, chronic dehydration may even contribute to the development of mild, persistent inflammation that can increase with age.

Movement

Light movement in the morning can help the body relax before the day while supporting overall health.

Regular physical activity is linked to lower levels of chronic inflammation. However, more intense exercise may temporarily increase inflammatory markers in the short term.

Stretching can help reduce inflammation markers throughout the body, as well as locally in the tissues being stretched. A short walk or low-intensity yoga session can offer similar benefits — intense workouts are not necessary.

Go outside

Spending time outdoors in the morning can help you sleep better at night. This is because morning sunlight helps regulate the body’s circadian rhythm, which strongly affects the sleep-wake cycle.

The circadian rhythm is also closely linked to the immune system and inflammation levels. When it is disrupted, it is associated with higher levels of C-reactive protein, a marker of systemic inflammation.

In addition, morning light helps the body produce vitamin D, which is known for its anti-inflammatory properties.

Eat berries

The deep purple and red colors of your favorite berries indicate how rich they are in antioxidants. In particular, berries are high in phenolic compounds such as anthocyanins and flavonols, which help reduce inflammation in the body.

Berries are also very tasty. If you can’t find them fresh, frozen berries are just as beneficial and often more affordable.

Try pairing them with protein-rich Greek yogurt or adding them to smoothies.

Mindful pause

According to a study in the journal Biomedicines, stress can play a significant role in inflammation development. During stress, the body releases hormones such as cortisol.

This response is useful in the short term, but chronic stress can keep these signals elevated, contributing to ongoing inflammation in the body.

A few minutes of calm in the morning may help counteract this effect. Simple mindfulness practices such as deep breathing, meditation, or even a quiet breakfast without phones can help reduce stress levels and provide a more balanced start to the day.

Enjoy a cup of coffee or tea

A morning cup of coffee or tea does more than just provide a caffeine boost — it can also support the body’s inflammatory response. Both drinks are rich in antioxidants, compounds that help reduce oxidative stress and inflammation.

Green tea contains several antioxidants that help reduce inflammation. Black tea offers similar benefits thanks to its unique blend of polyphenols.

Coffee is also one of the biggest sources of antioxidants in many people’s diets and is rich in polyphenols that are linked to reduced inflammation.
