Thanks to smart sensors, the watch can act even when its owner is unconscious. From monitoring heart function to detecting serious car crashes, the device can independently respond to emergencies, according to BGR.
Heart rate monitoring
The watch's sensors detect abnormally high or low pulse rates. This feature can help identify atrial fibrillation and heart failure at early stages. In 2024, it helped 35-year-old Sneha Saha, a US resident, diagnose a heart condition she had mistaken for ordinary stress. A similar case was with 22-year-old Kamron Jones — the watch timely warned him about heart failure.
Fall detection
If the device detects a hard impact and the user remains motionless for one minute, it automatically calls emergency services. It also sends a message with precise geolocation to pre-selected emergency contacts. This feature has already saved a Reddit user who lost consciousness due to blood clots in the lungs, and the watch managed to alert his wife about his critical condition.
Crash detection
The system activates during severe car accidents. If the driver does not respond to the watch's alert within 30 seconds, Apple Watch automatically calls emergency services and notifies relatives about the crash.
Backtrack navigation
This feature helps tourists return to their starting point when there are no landmarks. In the Compass app, users can select Record Path to log their route and then use Retrace Steps to guide them precisely back along the same path.
Satellite connectivity in newer models
The latest Apple Watch Ultra 3 supports satellite connectivity, allowing users to send emergency messages and share their location even in areas with no mobile network coverage. The feature is currently free for two years after device activation.
Safety features can be managed in the Settings directly on the watch or via the Watch app on iPhone. However, experts remind users that while the Apple Watch is a powerful early-warning tool for accidents and health issues, it does not replace the need for qualified specialists' assistance.
