Fatigue and loss of energy throughout the day can be directly related to one’s diet. Certain products can energize the body and combat tiredness, informs Ukrainian nutritionist Olha Bezuhla.

Which foods are beneficial

Buckwheat
According to the nutritionist, the body converts carbohydrates into energy. Simple carbohydrates digest quickly and provide a burst of energy for a short time. In contrast, whole grains provide energy for a longer duration. It is essential to know that whole grain cereals are the best source of energy for the day.

Nuts
Nuts are a source of plant-based protein and healthy fats, a necessary combination for the normal functioning of the body. During periods of fatigue or in the rehabilitation phase after illness or surgery, the fats found in nuts are particularly valuable. They help accelerate cell regeneration, stimulate immune system activity, and restore energy metabolism. Depending on the condition of the digestive organs, one might prefer macadamia nuts (which contain up to 95 g of fat per 100 g) or opt for the more "low-fat" options, such as cashews or almonds (with 44 g and 50 g of fat, respectively).

Brown rice
Brown rice consists of grains that are not stripped of their husks. It contains less starch than white rice and is an excellent source of energy and micronutrients (potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus) while containing virtually no fats. All whole grains naturally contain a significant amount of B vitamins (especially B1 and B6), magnesium, phosphorus, selenium, and manganese. The processing only removes the inedible husk.

Chocolate
Chocolate contains caffeine, which works by blocking adenosine receptors, leading to increased dopamine and norepinephrine levels. The expert noted that adenosine promotes sleep, while dopamine and norepinephrine are two chemicals that stimulate the heart and central nervous system, thereby enhancing alertness and concentration.

Whole grain oatmeal
Oats are rich in B vitamins, which help convert carbohydrates into useful energy and reduce stress. Oatmeal also has a low glycemic index and high fiber content, providing a sustained energy boost rather than a short-term spike, as carbohydrates enter the bloodstream gradually.

Which foods deplete energy

Red meat
While red meat contains many necessary micronutrients, it can also shorten lifespan. The body expends a lot of energy digesting meat, especially processed meats like sausages and hot dogs. Despite the energy expenditure involved, you receive almost no nutritional value from red meat.

Sweets
Eating sweets on an empty stomach stimulates the pancreas, which begins to produce insulin more actively to lower blood sugar. As a result, rather than feeling energized, one often experiences fatigue.

White bread
Consuming a morning toast activates the pancreas, provoking insulin release, which leads to a feeling of tiredness. After all the processing, white bread consists primarily of starch, which is necessary for saturating the body.
