To improve the functioning of the thyroid gland and protect it from hormonal disruptions, you need to include healthy foods in your diet.

RBC-Ukraine reports on the main symptoms that indicate health problems.

How to understand that there are thyroid problems

Changes in weight

An increase in hormone levels leads to weight loss, and a decrease, on the contrary, to extra pounds. In this case, diets or workouts won't help you get back in shape, but it will be possible after treatment.

Temperature

Even in some healthy people, the steady-state body temperature can be higher or lower than 36.6°. However, if it has changed and remains outside the personal norm for a long time, it is probably a sign of hormonal imbalance.

Discomfort in neck area

If you have difficulty breathing, swelling, and feel small spherical lumps in the inflamed lymph nodes, these may be the consequences of an enlarged thyroid gland.

Dry skin

This can be an additional symptom for diagnosing the disease. Other signs include flaky skin on the elbows and knees, rashes, irritation, inflammation, and hypersensitivity.

Muscle pain

Low levels of thyroid hormones lead to damage to nerve endings, which can cause cramps, muscle pain, and numbness in the extremities.

What foods are good for thyroid gland

Endocrinologist Olesia Pidmurniak named the main foods to improve thyroid function:

  • walnuts
  • blueberries
  • persimmon
  • brown rice
  • spinach
  • cod
  • honey
  • seaweed
  • dark chocolate
  • avocado
  • shrimp
  • lentils
  • salmon

Eating a nutritious thyroid diet not only keeps you feeling good but also helps your digestive system function smoothly.

Reduce your intake of bad fats and simple carbohydrates. Some dietary fats contribute to heart disease and some forms of cancer. Reduce saturated fats, which come primarily from animal products such as meat and cheese.

Instead, choose fats that help lower LDL cholesterol levels, such as monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats from vegetable oils, as well as omega-3 fats found in some types of fish.

Women should be especially vigilant, as hormone problems occur more often than in men.

We previously reported on 3 hormones that contribute to a healthy human weight.
