Even if you take out the trash regularly, an unpleasant smell can linger in the bin and quickly spread through the kitchen. But there are several simple ways to solve this problem using common household products.
RBC-Ukraine explains what you can put in your trash bin to keep your kitchen smelling fresh for longer.
Citrus peels
Don’t throw away lemon, orange or mandarin peels. Place a few pieces at the bottom of the bag or directly in the bin.
Citrus has a strong, fresh scent that can help mask odors from food waste. It’s best to replace the peels every few days.
Baking soda
This is one of the simplest options. Sprinkle 2–3 tablespoons of baking soda into the bottom of a clean, dry bin, then put in the trash bag.
Baking soda can help absorb unpleasant odors and excess moisture. Once it becomes damp, replace it.
Coffee grounds
Don’t rush to throw away the grounds after your morning coffee. A small amount can be dried, placed in a small cloth bag or paper filter and left near the trash bag.
The coffee aroma can help mask unpleasant odors. It’s important to use dry grounds, as moisture can encourage mold growth.
Paper at the bottom
Often, the problem isn’t just the trash itself but the liquid that collects at the bottom of the bag. This can become a source of a strong odor.
Place several layers of old newspaper, a paper towel, or a piece of cardboard at the bottom. They will absorb some of the moisture, helping reduce the smell.
Vinegar for the bin itself
If the smell has already seeped into the plastic, simply replacing the bag may not be enough. After taking out the trash, wash the bin with water and dish soap, then wipe it down with a mixture of vinegar and water.
Afterward, make sure to leave the bin open until it is completely dry. A damp bin is often the reason unpleasant odors return.
The key is not to use all these methods at once. For everyday freshness, baking soda or citrus peels are enough, while the bin itself should be washed regularly and dried thoroughly.
