Jose Matos weighed 226 kilograms at the age of 32 and was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. He was hospitalized due to his health condition, and after that, he decided to change his life and lose weight, according to Today.

How he managed to lose 68 kilograms

After yet another health scare, Matos changed his diet and began exercising, losing over 68 kilograms.

"It felt like the floor around me was crumbling. It was terrifying. It was scary. I love my kids and my wife more than anything else," Jose recalls.

He is now continuing to work toward his target weight and says he no longer needs medication for high blood pressure or daily insulin injections to control his blood sugar levels.

Before his weight loss, Matos loved fast food and ate it two to three times a day.

His typical diet then consisted of three hamburgers, a large portion of fries, and a giant glass of soda.

Fast, salty processed, and frozen food was regular for him.

Matos could eat a bag of rolls or a large pizza in one sitting, washing it down with sugary drinks or juices. By his estimates, he consumed about 6,000 calories a day.

So, Jose began working with a trainer and losing weight.

Following his advice, Matos stopped eating processed, frozen, and fast food and focused on whole foods high in protein, such as chicken, steak, and fish.

High-protein foods help people feel strong and full.

He limited carbohydrates and started tracking everything he ate to ensure he maintained a daily calorie deficit.

“I avoided having the pizza rolls, sodas. I mostly drank water. I would avoid going out to eat,” he recalls.

He ate at home and cooked lunches with his wife every Sunday to ensure they were balanced and nutritious.

His first exercise was walking for 30 minutes. Then he added functional movements at home, like squats.

“Little by little, I started creating good habits of exercising,” he said.

Once he lost a bit of weight, he began going to the gym and focusing on upper and lower body workouts to target different muscle groups.

He usually finished with a 30-minute cardio workout on the treadmill or elliptical to reach his fat-burning pulse.

Now, Matos works out six days a week. When he sometimes doesn’t feel like going to the gym, he reminds himself what’s at stake.
