There are three things in every kitchen that pose a big health risk, according to nutritionist mariya_prohealth on Instagram.

What are three most dangerous items in the kitchen?

Sponge

The issue is that it is made from synthetic material (plastic). It is moist, and warm, usually with food remnants, which is the perfect environment for bacteria to multiply.

Such a sponge contains more bacteria than a toilet rim. Therefore, the sponge needs to be changed every few days.

Additionally, with mechanical wear, plastic particles remain on the dishes and can get into food.

An alternative is a sponge made of cellulose or a natural material called loofah. However, even these need to be changed every few days.

Damaged Teflon pan

Teflon is very toxic. In the manufacturing process, perfluorooctanoic acid, a recognized carcinogen, is used.

It's better not to choose Teflon at all, but it is especially dangerous when scratched, as this increases the release of perfluorooctanoic acid into food when heated. Similarly, the nutritionist advises against using plastic spatulas.

Microplastic heats up and is also released into food. Choose ceramic, steel, and cast iron pans, and wooden spatulas.

Plastic cutting board

Cutting on a plastic board leads to a person ingesting up to 100 grams of microplastic over a year.

It is a hormonal disruptor, meaning it attaches to hormone receptors, leading to problems with women's hormonal balance. Additionally, bacteria spores form in the micro-cracks from cuts. Choose wooden boards made from high-quality wood and safe glue.
