A new study from California Polytechnic State University surveyed nearly 5,000 WW (formerly Weight Watchers) participants who had successfully maintained an average weight loss of 20 kg for over three years.

Researchers examined the weight management strategies of WW participants and compared their lifestyle to a control group of more than 500 obese individuals who had not lost weight or had gained weight for five years or more.

By examining 54 different behaviors related to weight management, the researchers were able to determine which were the most important for maintaining a consistent healthy weight. Here’s what they found:

Choose food wisely

Unsurprisingly, one of the most important things you can do to control weight is to understand what healthy eating looks like and how to maintain it.

In this particular study, researchers noted that those who successfully maintained their weight often reported strategies like setting daily food intake goals. However, to set these daily food goals, you first need to know what healthy eating looks like for you.

A recent ranking of the best diets for overall health in 2020 showed that the Mediterranean diet was the healthiest for the third year in a row, followed by the DASH diet and the flexitarian diet.

Portion control / self-sontrol

Of course, what you eat is as important as how much you eat. It doesn’t matter how healthy the food you eat is if your portions are off (too many carbs, not enough healthy fat or protein, etc.). No amount of fruits and vegetables can change that.

People who successfully lost weight and maintained it also reported weighing their food, tracking what they ate, and using other methods of self-control.


It is crucial not to beat yourself up if you stray from healthy eating occasionally, but rather to allow yourself to deviate from the rules at times and then return to normal eating habits. Over time, maintaining weight loss can become easier and require less deliberate effort. So, keep going and try to stick to these strategies to maintain your healthy weight.
