11 ways to use salt in cleaning
Salt is a kitchen staple and the simplest seasoning, but thanks to its ability to absorb moisture, it's also an excellent tool for cleaning around the house.
RBC-Ukraine gathered some practical ways to use salt in your cleaning routine.
Remove greasy stains from cutting board
Salt, when combined with lemon juice, can effectively clean a cutting board. Simply sprinkle salt on the board, cut a lemon in half, and rub it across the surface.
Leave the salt overnight, then wipe the board with a cloth soaked in warm water the next morning. You can achieve the same results by making a paste from lemon juice and salt.
Clean cast iron pots or pans
Salt might not seem abrasive, but it’s quite effective. If you have dirty or greasy cookware, sprinkle enough salt to lightly cover the bottom.
Then scrub with a damp sponge or brush. Rinse off the salt and wash the cookware with hot water and dish soap. While salt works wonders on cast iron, avoid using it on non-stick surfaces, as it could damage the coating.
Scrub the bathtub
Any natural product with citric acid works magic when paired with salt for cleaning, and since citric acid kills bacteria, salt and lemon are ideal for tackling mold and soap scum in the bathroom.
Sprinkle salt on the bathtub, cut a medium-sized lemon in half, and rub the surface. Afterward, simply rinse away the salt.
Prevent mold on shower curtain
Salt can also prevent mold from forming on a plastic shower curtain. To do this, dissolve half a cup of salt in a bucket with 3.7 liters of water and soak the curtain in the solution for an hour. Repeat the procedure monthly to keep mold at bay.
Remove coffee stains from cups
If you're a coffee lover, you’ve probably noticed dark rings or brown stains at the bottom of your favorite mug. However, a little salt and water can take care of those stains. Simply wet the inside of the cup, then add a tablespoon of salt and scrub with a sponge.
Clean floors and tiles
The abrasive texture of salt helps remove a variety of stains from floors. To clean, dissolve a handful of salt in 1.5 liters of hot water. This solution can be used as a primary cleaner for tiles, grout, and other hard surfaces.
However, avoid using this method on marble floors, as the coarse salt granules can damage the material.
Degrease oven
While the oven is still warm, sprinkle greasy spots with salt and leave it for a while. The salt will make it easier to scrape off sticky grime from the oven walls. Once the oven cools down, scrape off the hardened salty residue with a plastic scraper.
If the oven is cold, you can still clean it with salt. Simply spray water on the dried dirt, sprinkle it with salt, and scrape off the grease.
Clean fridge
Salt can be used to thoroughly clean refrigerator shelves. Just sprinkle an equal amount of salt and baking soda onto a damp sponge and wipe down the fridge's interior surfaces.
Remove wine stains
Thanks to its absorbent properties, salt can soak up red wine stains and make them easier to remove. To tackle a stain, sprinkle it with salt, wait 2-3 minutes, then rinse the stained area with cold water.
Remove water rings
Water rings on wood can be removed with a paste made from a teaspoon of salt and a few drops of water. Gently rub the paste into the ring with a soft cloth until it disappears. Afterward, apply furniture polish.
Make an all-purpose kitchen cleaner
Mix equal parts salt and vinegar in a bowl, then transfer the mixture into a spray bottle. Shake the bottle before spraying it on countertops, tables, or surfaces in the kitchen or bathroom. After spraying, wipe with a damp sponge.
Rinse the sponge and wipe again to remove the cleaner. If the dirt is old, sprinkle salt directly onto a damp sponge and scrub the surface until it’s clean.
