"A 16-year-old high-school student attacked a police station in western Türkiye on Monday with a shotgun, killing two police officers. Two other police officers and a civilian were wounded in the attack in the Balcova district of Izmir, Türkiye’s third largest city," Izmir province Gov. Suleyman Elban said.
The teenager was apprehended after police shot him in the leg. According to Elban, the attacker first shot a police officer standing guard in front of the station, and the second victim was the chief inspector, who was killed in the ensuing clash.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya added that the boy’s parents and two of his friends were detained for questioning as part of the investigation. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan expressed condolences to the police and noted that all of the attacker’s connections are being checked.
Reports indicate that the teenager had no prior criminal record and lived on the same street as the police station. He used a pump-action shotgun belonging to his father. Investigators are still working to establish the motive.
