Israel carried out a series of airstrikes on areas near Homs, Latakia, and Palmyra in Syria, prompting a sharp reaction from Damascus and a new escalation in the region, according to Reuters.

Israel continues active operations in Syria. On the night of Monday, September 8, according to local media, Israeli aircraft struck areas near Homs, Latakia, and Palmyra.

Syria’s Foreign Ministry sharply condemned the attacks, calling them a "gross violation of sovereignty" and a threat to the security of the entire region. The official statement described the strikes as part of a series of escalations Israel has carried out in recent months.

At the same time, Syrian media provided no details on the scale of destruction or the number of casualties. Israel has also not issued any official comments.

Back on July 16, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) for the first time targeted sites in Damascus, striking the General Staff buildings, the presidential palace, and the Ministry of Defense. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said the actions were aimed at delivering “painful blows” to the Syrian leadership.

He also described Syria’s new leaders as "disguised jihadists" and stressed that Israel would not allow combat forces to be redeployed to the country’s south. Katz noted special attention was being given to protecting the Druze community, which faces the risk of attacks.

Later, it was reported that after several days of clashes, Syrian officials and Druze minority leaders reached an agreement to restore a ceasefire. This step was seen as an attempt to stabilize the situation following Israeli strikes and internal Syrian conflicts.

Israel has expressed readiness to forgo an offensive on Gaza City if an agreement is reached on ending the war and releasing hostages held by Hamas. This position followed reports in Israeli media that the US, Qatar, and Egypt intended to propose a comprehensive deal to bring all captives home.

Meanwhile, the Israeli government is considering annexing parts of the West Bank, spurred by plans among several Western states to recognize Palestine as an independent state.
