In Lisbon, the Glória funicular, considered one of the city’s landmarks, derailed. Fifteen people were killed and at least 20 others were injured, according to CNN Portugal.

The funicular connecting Lisbon’s Restauradores Square with the São Pedro de Alcântara garden derailed at high speed, crashed into a building, and overturned.

According to police, 15 people were killed and at least 20 injured. At least five of the injured are in serious condition. Among them is a three-year-old boy, though his condition is not life-threatening.

Lisbon has declared three days of mourning.

The "Elevador da Glória," designed to carry 43 passengers, is one of the Portuguese capital’s signature landmarks and a popular tourist attraction, transporting up to 3 million people annually.

Accidents and incidents worldwide

In July, a ferry carrying more than 60 people sank off the coast of Bali. Only about 20 passengers were rescued.

In June, a fire broke out aboard a hot-air balloon in the Brazilian city of Praia Grande. Of the 21 people on board, eight were killed.

And in India, an Air India passenger flight traveling from Ahmedabad to London crashed, killing 260 people.
