A 16-year-old girl was pushed under a train. In 2022, the victim’s family fled Russian-occupied Mariupol and found refuge in the German state of Thuringia, according to the German outlet Stern.

On the day of the incident, an unknown man approached police officers on the train platform and pointed them to the girl’s body.

At first, police assumed it was an accident and issued a warrant for the man’s detention on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter.

However, a DNA test later revealed his traces on the victim’s shoulder, and the case was reclassified.

Investigators believe that the suspect, 31-year-old Muhammad, deliberately pushed 16-year-old Ukrainian citizen Liana off the platform in front of a freight train.

The man had already come to police attention earlier for causing disturbances at a station. He behaved aggressively and had been admitted to a psychiatric clinic. He was previously diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.

Muhammad had applied for asylum in Germany but was rejected and was to be deported to Lithuania. No connection between him and the girl has been established.

On the day of the incident, August 11, Liana was returning home from school while speaking on the phone with her grandfather. He heard her scream and immediately alerted her parents.

Victim's family

In July 2022, Liana’s family fled Mariupol and settled in Geisleden, Thuringia, where the municipality provided housing. Her parents found work, and she had two younger brothers, aged 5 and 11.

The suspect remains in a closed psychiatric facility while prosecutors examine whether he is criminally responsible.

Earlier, RBC-Ukraine also reported on the murder of 23-year-old Ukrainian citizen Iryna Zarutska, who had moved to the United States to escape the war. She was found stabbed in Charlotte, North Carolina.

In another case, the body of a Ukrainian man was discovered in a Kraków hotel room he had lived in for the past two years.
