President Donald Trump announced his intention to impose 100% tariffs on all microchips and semiconductors imported into the United States from other countries, according to a White House broadcast.

"So 100% tariff on all chips and semiconductors coming into the United States," said the US President.

He added that if a foreign company commits to building a plant in the United States, it will not be subject to tariffs.

"If you've made a commitment to build or if you're in the process of building, as many are, there is no tariff. Okay? If for some reason you say you're building and you don't build, then we go back and get we add it up. It accumulates and we charge you at a later date, you have to pay, and that's a guarantee," Trump stated.

The President noted that these measures are aimed at protecting American industry and reducing dependence on foreign suppliers.

According to him, the introduction of new tariffs will help create additional jobs in the US and stimulate the development of high-tech production in the domestic market.

Tariffs on electronics imports to US

In early April, Trump imposed tariffs on imports from more than 180 countries. This included tariffs on computers, chips, and semiconductors imported into the US.

However, it turned out that such tariffs could raise the cost of an iPhone by 30–40%, as Apple sources components and manufactures its products in China, Taiwan, and other Asian countries.

In response, Trump said iPhone production could be moved to the United States.

Later, the President lifted tariffs on smartphone and computer imports. However, the administration announced plans to introduce new tariffs within two months on critical tech products from China.

Additionally, during a press conference on August 6, Trump did not rule out the imposition of secondary sanctions against China for its support of the war against Ukraine.
