French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to deliver an address on the evening of October 8, according to Le Figaro.

French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to speak once the deadline he gave former Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu to hold talks with political parties expires.

According to Le Figaro, Macron may announce the dissolution of the National Assembly, France’s lower house of parliament.

The outlet reports that Macron separately met with Senate Speaker Gérard Larcher and National Assembly President Yaël Braun-Pivet. Under Article 12 of the French Constitution, such consultations are required before a dissolution of the lower chamber.

However, another Le Figaro source said the discussions focused on finding "points of balance." Macron is expected to make a final decision after receiving Lecornu’s report summarizing negotiations with party leaders.

Parliamentary crisis in France

On October 6, Sébastien Lecornu submitted his resignation as France’s prime minister, which President Macron accepted.

Earlier, on September 8, the National Assembly passed a vote of no confidence in the government led by François Bayrou. The motion was supported by 194 out of 364 deputies, uniting opposition parties from the far left to the far right against Macron’s camp.

The following day, on September 9, Macron appointed the former defense minister as the new prime minister, tasking him with holding consultations with parliamentary forces and forming a new cabinet.

Lecornu became France’s fifth prime minister in two years.
