The minerals deal with the United States will provide an opportunity for the development of the extractive industry in Ukraine. In particular, this refers to oil and gas, as well as critical minerals such as graphite, states Doctor of Economics, Professor at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, and founder and head of Advanter Group, Andrii Dlihach, in a comment to the RBC-Ukraine YouTube channel.

"What is already clear is that this document could provide opportunities for the development of the extractive industry in Ukraine. It is far from being saturated, and it’s no secret that Ukraine could become the largest supplier of gas, oil, and petroleum products to the European Union," said Dlihach.

According to him, the agreement will definitely involve the extraction of critical minerals, including graphite.

"And we would like Ukrainian influence on the decisions of this fund to help create not only extraction capacities but also processing capacities. The agreement doesn't directly mention this, but the fact that Ukraine is no longer a junior partner in this fund, but an equal one, with the same number of votes, gives hope that we will be able to convince our partners of the need to invest in infrastructure, logistics, and processing capacities," noted the expert.

Minerals deal

On May 1, Ukraine and the United States signed a minerals deal. It stipulates that the two countries will create an investment fund, with funds coming from the sale of Ukrainian mineral resources.

According to Ukraine's Minister of Economy, Yuliia Svyrydenko, the document enshrines important points for our country while remaining beneficial for both states. In particular, the subsoil resources remain under Ukrainian ownership.
