Shelling of Ukraine: Expert names biggest threat from Russia
The Russian Oreshnik ballistic missile, which is frequently depicted by Russian propaganda, is actually not as formidable a weapon. The greater threat to Ukraine comes from combined missile and drone attacks, states Pavlo Lakiichuk, the head of security programs at the Strategy XXI Globalistics Center, in a comment to the RBC-Ukraine YouTube channel.
"About that Oreshnik. Have you noticed that Putin (Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia - ed.), his Minister of Defense (Andrey Belousov, - ed.), and his propagandists have started to scare us with that Oreshnik, and we have started to get scared together? In fact, it's not as terrifying a weapon as they are painting it to be," explained Lakiichuk.
According to the head of security programs at the Strategy XXI Globalistics Center, the greatest threat to Ukrainians, as mentioned earlier, comes from combined missile and drone attacks. During these shelling attacks, the enemy uses ballistic, aerobalistic, sonic, and hypersonic missiles.
"...from different directions, at varying speeds, hundreds of drones at once — this is the real threat to Ukrainians. And every time, I wouldn’t want to say that we’re on the verge of terrible consequences, but thanks to our air defense, they are doing an incredible job," he added.
Shelling of Ukraine
Throughout 2024, Russia carried out thirteen large-scale shelling attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. Currently, active repair and restoration work is underway at energy facilities.
However, the enemy continues its air attacks. Specifically, on the night of January 1st to 2nd, Russia used 72 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for attacks. Air defense forces managed to destroy 47 of them.
Additionally, on November 21st, Russian forces launched the Oreshnik missile at Ukraine for the first time during the full-scale war. Following this, President Putin claimed that Russia had conducted a test of this type of weapon.
