Expert names main goal of possible Israeli ground operation in Lebanon
The main goal of a possible ground operation by Israel in Lebanon is to push Hezbollah militants away from its borders, states historian and political commentator from Israel Vadym Polishchuk in a comment to the YouTube channel RBC-Ukraine.
"The main goal of this Lebanese operation, besides weakening Hezbollah, is to push it away from the border with Israel, from this southern Lebanon," said Polischuk.
According to the expert, there are legal grounds for this.
"This is precisely UN Resolution 1701, which states that Hezbollah's southern presence should not exist. Well, it would be preferable to push it even further away, but at least this much," he noted.
Polischuk added that Israel had already offered Hezbollah to withdraw from its borders, but the Lebanese group did not agree. Therefore, the Israeli army is now preparing for a ground operation in Lebanon.
"And some military movements are already taking place on the ground, with Israeli forces being deployed there now. Three divisions are currently stationed at the border. There is a likelihood that once everything is ready, they will enter and resolve this issue. And the residents of northern Israel will be able to return to their homes without fearing that something will strike them tomorrow," noted the historian.

What preceded it
In recent weeks, the conflict between Israel and the fighters of the Lebanese group Hezbollah, which is supported by Iran, has significantly escalated.
On Saturday, September 28, the Israeli army launched a massive strike on Lebanese territory, during which Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was eliminated.
Yesterday, militants fired on northern areas of Israel, to which the IDF responded by destroying the launch pad from which the fire was directed.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Israel may begin a ground invasion of Lebanon as early as this week.
At the same time, the United States is urging Israel to refrain from starting a military operation in Lebanon and is insisting on seeking a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
