Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan plans to present his own proposal to freeze the war in Ukraine. It may be a signal to US President-elect Donald Trump, as Volodymyr Fesenko, head of the Penta Center for Applied Political Studies, told RBC-Ukraine.

According to Fesenko, a “parade” of peace plans for Ukraine is now beginning among political leaders and it will be obvious at the G20 summit in Brazil.

“Most likely, it will be discussed publicly, they will talk to Lavrov about it, about the extent to which Russia is ready to end the war,” Fesenko said.

He also believes that the Turkish President's peace plan is a kind of signal to Donald Trump.

“As for Erdoğan and his plan, it looks like a pass to the Americans and Trump. The content is very similar to some of the ideas that are already being made public by the Trump team. For example, Trump is talking about a 20-year moratorium on Ukraine's membership in NATO, while Erdoğan is talking about 10 years. Further, the demilitarized zone is also a classic of ending a war, a ceasefire along the front line. But Erdoğan also has specific ideas,” Fesenko said.

Erdoğan's plan is quite concrete, and other partners can take it into account, the expert added.

“With this plan, Erdoğan is sending a pass to Trump. He says: I'm also for peace, I'm ready to help. As in 2022, to provide a platform for negotiations and become a mediator. The Americans - and this will be a problem and a challenge for them - are they ready to directly participate in the negotiations? They will initiate them, but we don't know how ready they are to participate in the current negotiations. And it may be necessary to have some kind of mediator to help in this process, and Erdoğan demonstrates that he is ready to be such a mediator,” Fesenko said.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan plans to present his own proposal to freeze the war in Ukraine at the Group of Twenty (G20) summit. Among other things, it includes postponing discussions on joining NATO.
