Russia-Ukraine war: Situation on the front as of September 23

Russian occupiers attempted to regain lost positions in the area of Klishiivka in the Donetsk region but were unsuccessful, reports the General Staff of Ukraine.
Russians' attacks
Russia launched another attack on Ukraine using Shahed-136/131 kamikaze drones. As a result of the military operation conducted by the Air Force in coordination with air defense and other components of the Defense Forces, 14 out of 15 Shahed drones were destroyed.
The enemy carried out five missile and 44 aviation strikes, as well as 22 rocket artillery attacks on positions of Ukrainian forces and civilian areas. Unfortunately, there have been casualties and injuries among the civilian population due to these Russian terrorist attacks.
Private residential homes and other civilian infrastructure have also suffered damage and destruction.
The frontline situation
The operational situation in eastern and southern Ukraine remains complex. There have been 15 combat engagements within the past day.
In the Volyn and Polissia directions, the operational situation remains relatively stable, with no significant changes observed. There are no signs of the formation of offensive groupings. Identified units of the Belarusian armed forces continue to operate in border areas with Ukraine.
In the Siversk and Slobozhanske directions, the adversary maintains a military presence in border areas and continues shelling populated areas from Russian territory.
More than 20 populated areas, including Turiya, Bleshnia, Progres, Yanzhulivka, and Hrem'yach in Chernihiv region; Novovasylivka, Marchyhina Buda, Iskriskivshchyna, Zapsillia, and Pozhnia in Sumy region; as well as Udi, Morokhovets, Neskuchne, Budarky, and Topoli in Kharkiv region, were subjected to artillery and mortar shelling by the enemy.
In the Kupiansk direction, the adversary conducted airstrikes in the vicinity of populated areas including Synkivka, Ivanivka, Kyslivka in the Kharkiv region and Nadiya in the Luhansk region. Artillery and mortar shelling affected regions around more than 10 populated areas, including Berestove, Masiutivka, Kucherivka, Ivanivka, and Kyslivka in the Kharkiv region.
In the Lyman direction, Ukrainian Defense Forces successfully repelled an enemy attack in the area of Bilohorivka in the Luhansk region. Aerial strikes targeted areas near populated areas including Nevske, Bilohorivka in the Luhansk region, and Serebrianka, Spirne, and Vesele in the Donetsk region. More than 10 populated areas, including Nevske, Bilohorivka in the Luhansk region, and Novosadove, Torske, Hryhorivka, Verkhniokamyanske, Spirne in the Donetsk region, were affected by artillery and mortar shelling.
In the Bakhmut direction, the adversary attempted to regain lost ground in the area of Klishiivka in the Donetsk region but was unsuccessful. Instead, they carried out an aerial strike in the vicinity of this populated area. More than 15 populated areas, including Vasiukivka, Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Bohdanivka, Klishiivka, Bila Hora, and New York in the Donetsk region, came under artillery and mortar fire.
In the Avdiivka direction, Ukrainian Defense Forces are successfully holding their positions on the occupied frontlines. The enemy carried out an aerial strike near Avdiivka in the Donetsk region. The areas of Keramik, Novobakhmutivka, Stepove, Tonenke, and Pervomaiske in the Donetsk region were subjected to artillery and mortar shelling.
In the Maryinka direction, Ukrainian defenders successfully repelled nine enemy attacks in the areas of Maryinka and Pobeda in the Donetsk region throughout the day. The enemy conducted an aerial strike near Maryinka in the Donetsk region.
More than 10 populated areas, including Nevelske, Oleksandrivka, Krasnohorivka, Pobeda, Novomykhailivka, and Katerynivka in the Donetsk region, were under enemy fire.
In the Shakhtarsk direction, the enemy conducted aerial strikes in the areas of the populated settlements Vuhledar, Urozhaine, and Staromykhailivka in the Donetsk region. Approximately 10 populated areas, including Vodiane, Vuhledar, Prechystivka, Zolota Niva, Blahodatne, and Urozhaine in the Donetsk region, were subjected to artillery and mortar shelling.
In the Zaporizhzhia direction, Ukrainian forces continue their offensive operation in the vicinity of Verbne in the Zaporizhzhia region, pushing the enemy out of occupied positions and consolidating on captured positions. The enemy conducted an aerial strike near Robotyne in the Zaporizhzhia region.
Over 10 populated areas, including Chervone, Zaliznychne, Huliaypole, Novoandriivka, Shcherbaky, and Kamianske in Zaporizhzhia region, were subjected to artillery and mortar shelling.
In the Kherson direction, the enemy conducted aerial strikes in the areas of populated settlements Kozatske, Mykolaivka, and Olhivka in the Kherson region. Approximately 10 populated areas in the Kherson region, including Novooleksandrivka, Dudchany, Zmiivka, Tokarivka, Veletenske, and Kizomys, were targeted by enemy artillery and mortar fire.
Offensive by Ukrainian Armed Forces
The Ukrainian defense forces continue their offensive operation on the Melitopol direction, conducting offensive (assault) actions on the Bahmut direction. They inflict losses on the occupying forces in personnel and equipment and exhaust the enemy along the entire front line.
Russians' losses
During the day, the aviation of the Defense Forces carried out eight strikes on the areas of personnel, equipment, and military vehicles concentration, and four strikes on the enemy's anti-aircraft missile complexes.
Units of the missile forces hit one area of personnel, equipment, and military vehicles concentration, one anti-aircraft missile complex, five artillery units, and one enemy radar station.
