Ukraine can hold elections, but only if a ceasefire is ensured during the electoral process, stated President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Speaking at a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing, the Ukrainian President said that if US President Donald Trump has begun talking more about elections in Ukraine, the country can try to hold them.

Zelensky stressed that Ukraine is not hiding from democracy.

"But to make elections possible, there must be a security component, and America can help with this the most. If there is a need for elections now, there must be a ceasefire at least during the election process and during voting. This is something that must be discussed," the President said.

He added that this issue still requires discussion. At the same time, Kyiv believes the United States should raise this condition with the Russian side.

Elections in Ukraine

Earlier, US President Donald Trump claimed that Ukraine was no longer a democracy because it had not held elections for a long time. According to him, the war in Ukraine is being used as a reason not to hold them.

In response, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he is ready to take part in the elections.

According to the Ukrainian President, he asked the United States to ensure security for holding elections. If this happens, they could be held within 60–90 days.

Zelenskyy also said he is waiting for proposals from lawmakers — legislative initiatives that would allow elections to take place under martial law.

The president stressed that he supports holding elections so as not to leave room for manipulation.
