Zelenskyy says he didn't hear Trump plans to stop supporting Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he had not heard that US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump might withdraw support for Ukraine if he wins, citing his remarks during a press conference with participants of the Ukraine-Northern Europe summit.
"I haven’t heard Trump say he would cut off support. We don’t know what the future holds. We understand all the risks that might arise. The biggest risk would be if US policy shifts (post-election - ed.)," said Zelenskyy.
According to him, no one knows yet who the next US president will be, but Ukraine also counts on bipartisan support in Congress.
"I’m not sure that Trump, if he becomes president, would actually want to lose. Lose in the sense of stopping support for Ukraine. But I agree with you, there are risks. That’s why Ukraine has its internal plan to strengthen itself," Zelenskyy said.
US presidential election
On November 5, the US will hold its presidential election. The main candidates are Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Kamala Harris.
According to the latest polls, Trump has a slight edge over Harris, though the margin is narrow. A Bloomberg survey shows the two candidates are tied in seven key states.
In related news, former President Donald Trump and his running mate, J.D. Vance, recently outlined a plan to end the war in Ukraine. Their proposal suggests a frozen conflict model with autonomous regions on both sides of a demilitarized zone while keeping Kyiv outside of NATO.
