There is a mutual understanding between the US and Ukrainian teams regarding what is truly happening on the battlefield and what progress can be made, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said during a briefing with journalists.
The President said Ukraine spent several days at the UN General Assembly, which brought important political changes and practical steps for the country.
"We fully shifted the focus. The main issue is Ukraine. Of course, Gaza is also an important issue at the General Assembly. But what matters is that Ukraine is a topic for all leaders. Everyone not only mentions it, but they also want different formats and different meetings," he said.
Zelenskyy noted that Ukraine held many meetings, including what he described as a very good one with US President Donald Trump.
"We have an understanding between our teams of what is really happening on the battlefield and what progress may be achieved," the President said.
He also pointed to progress with an economic agreement called the minerals deal. A new fund has been launched, and a major meeting was held with American business representatives who want to invest in Ukraine through the fund.
"This will happen. Now it moves to the level of the Cabinet of Ministers. We agreed that most of the practical meetings will be conducted by Prime Minister of Ukraine Yuliia Svyrydenko in October in the US," Zelenskyy said.
The President also said there was an agreement to purchase weapons in the US through different programs. Technical meetings will be held by the Ukrainian delegation starting in late September and early October.
“The main points we discussed and agreed with the President. Now we move to practical implementation. We will also work in the energy sector. This is not only about defense. It is about who Ukraine can be and who it will be in the future, and we believe in the near future — between the US and Europe," Zelenskyy added.
Along with the large weapons deal, which has the working title "Megadeal," the sides also discussed the "Dronedeal." Technical teams are now beginning work on that agreement.
"These are our drones, which will be purchased directly by the US. Of course, we also discussed diplomatic steps toward a possible end to the war," Zelenskyy concluded.
Trump is confident Ukraine can return to the 1991 borders
After he met with Zelenskyy, Trump wrote on Truth Social that Ukraine could fully restore its territorial integrity with EU support and go even further.
"I think Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is in a position to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form," Trump wrote.
