Russia came up with absolutely crazy plans for an offensive in Ukraine's Sumy region, but their troops are being destroyed there, said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in his evening address.

The head of state said he had convened a meeting of the Staff of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief. In particular, there was a very detailed report on the frontline situation. Special attention was given to the Sumy region and activity near the border.

"The Russians had various plans and intentions there - crazy ones, as always. We are holding them back and eliminating these killers, defending our Sumy region," Zelenskyy emphasized.

Russian offensive in Sumy region

Russian forces have entered Ukraine's Sumy region and are currently holding territory in the border zone.

Against this backdrop, the head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration, Oleh Hryhorov, explained that Russia is attempting to create a buffer zone in the region.

Taking into account Russia's active actions in the Sumy region, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine added a new direction of fighting - the Northern-Slobozhanskyi direction.

Meanwhile, today, June 20, Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed he had not ordered his troops to occupy Sumy, but said he "does not rule out" such a scenario.
