Zelenskyy outlines initial step toward peace talks with Russia
Active hostilities in Ukraine have continued for over 2.5 years. However, a mutual cessation of strikes on energy infrastructure could represent the first step toward ending the active phase of the Russian-Ukrainian war, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Specifically, the Ukrainian president stated that when it comes to energy and freedom of navigation, achieving results in these areas would signal that Russia might be willing to end the war.
Zelenskyy believes that if Moscow and Kyiv agree to halt attacks on infrastructure, it would mark a significant step toward de-escalating the conflict.
"We saw during the first (peace -ed.) summit that there could be a decision on energy security. In other words, we do not attack their energy infrastructures; they don’t attack ours. Could this lead to the end of the war’s hot phase? I think so," Zelenskyy said.
Zelenskyy also stated that Ukraine is currently discussing security guarantees, including NATO, with its Western partners.
"In all discussions, we now raise the issue of security guarantees, and the strongest of all is NATO," the President reported.
In a column for the Finnish publication Hufvudstadsbladet, Andrii Yermak, head of the Presidential Office, stated that Ukraine is ready to discuss adjustments to the peace agreement, specifically the peace formula proposed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. However, any discussions must uphold the country's territorial integrity and full sovereignty.
