President Volodymyr Zelenskyy hopes the Democratic Party's victory in the US midterm elections will let Kyiv secure more American aid. This includes both financial support and weapons supplies, Reuters reports.

The Ukrainian leader believes that increased support from Washington could influence Russian leader Vladimir Putin's position.

The president noted that Democrats openly support Ukraine and restoring closer ties between the United States and Europe. He also thanked Republicans who support Kyiv.

"I am also grateful to the Republicans, but the Democrats speak very clearly about supporting Ukraine and providing assistance to Ukraine. They speak about renewing the connection between the United States and Europe... Therefore, there is hope that a balance of power will emerge and that we will receive more support," Zelenskyy said.

The president's expectations are linked to the results of the US midterm elections. As a result, Democrats will control both chambers of Congress starting in 2027.

According to Zelenskyy, if Congress begins pushing for substantial financial and military assistance to Ukraine, it could put additional pressure on Moscow.

"If Congress now speaks of strong financial support or military assistance, as Europe is doing and demonstrating today, then that will be something positive that will have an impact on Putin," the Ukrainian leader emphasized.

Earlier, it was reported that Democrats could approve new aid for Ukraine and are also likely to have the two-thirds majority needed to override Trump's veto.

Media reports suggest that Democrats could restore direct US military aid to Ukraine, which Trump discontinued.

As previously reported, following the November 3 US midterm elections, the Democratic Party took control of both chambers of Congress from Republicans.
