The government may consider holding elections in Ukraine online. But doing so during wartime is very difficult, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says in an interview with ZDF.
Online elections in Ukraine
Zelenskyy notes that if elections were held, a large portion of Ukraine's citizens would be unable to vote.
"The armed forces are on the front lines; they are also opposed to elections because they have no way to vote. Is that fair? Millions of people are in the trenches, and technically, it's impossible to organize this," the President says.
Zelenskyy notes that it is the military who should be the first to elect the head of state, because they have preserved Ukraine's independence and continue to do so.
In his view, all jobs are important, but in wartime, the priority lies with military personnel.
"But during wartime, the profession of a soldier is the most important one, because soldiers risk their lives. And holding elections in which soldiers cannot vote is unfair. It is one hundred percent unfair," he asserts.
According to the President, Ukraine may consider the possibility of holding online elections.
"It's possible, but then Parliament will have to seek and find a solution," the president says.
It is currently impossible to hold elections on the Diia platform. There are so-called pitfalls that also arose when voting took place on this service during the Eurovision Song Contest. This was stated by Verkhovna Rada Chairman Ruslan Stefanchuk.
In addition, the Verkhovna Rada is working on a law regarding the possibility of holding elections in Ukraine during wartime. However, Stefanchuk is convinced that holding them at this moment is absolutely impossible.
