Europe is on the verge of a time when the question of Article 5 of NATO will be decided not by the United States but in European capitals, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the Munich Security Conference 2024.

"Perhaps, Europe is facing times when a question of invoking Article 5 of NATO Treaty will not be a question for Washington at all, but rather for European capitals," the President said.

Article 5 of the NATO treaty provides that an attack on one member of the Alliance is an attack on all its members and triggers a response from all member states. The decision to invoke Article 5 of NATO is made after consultations among bloc participants.

Trump's scandalous statement

Former US President Donald Trump previously threatened that if re-elected, he would not defend NATO allies who "do not pay their bills."

He also added that, on the contrary, he would encourage Russia to attack such countries.

31 NATO countries have committed to spending 2% of their GDP on defense, but not all have done so individually.
