International Holocaust Remembrance Day

January 27 is International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Today, memorial events are taking place in Poland to mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp (Auschwitz). The event will be attended by leaders from many countries, as well as a group of 50 former Auschwitz prisoners.

The main celebrations on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the death camp will begin at 4 p.m. local time. The presidents of France, Italy, Austria, Czechia, Bulgaria, Germany, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland, Hungary, and Moldova will visit Auschwitz.

King Charles III of Great Britain will also attend the memorial events. The US delegation will be led by US Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff.

This memorial event commemorates the tragedy of the Holocaust, when during World War II, about 6 million Jews, including 1.5 million children, died in ghettos, labor and concentration camps, and during mass executions because of their nationality.
