Zelenskyy and Friedrich Merz discuss support for Ukraine

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy had a conversation with Friedrich Merz, leader of the CDU party, which won the German Bundestag elections. They agreed on positions to support Ukraine.
According to Zelenskyy, Ukraine highly appreciates Germany's efforts to restore European security and protect lives in our country.
“We remember that Germany is the leader in supplying air defense systems to Ukraine and plays a crucial role in ensuring our financial stability,” he wrote.
Zelenskyy announced that Merz had agreed to further cooperation and contacts.
Friedrich Merz is a German politician, leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), who, after the victory of the CDU/CSU bloc in the February 23, 2025 parliamentary elections, has a high chance of becoming the new chancellor of Germany.
Merz is known for his support of Ukraine. He was one of the first German politicians to visit Kyiv after the liberation of part of the Kyiv region in the spring of 2022. At that time, he emphasized the need to supply Ukraine with weapons and grant it the status of a candidate for accession to the European Union. Merz also expressed support for Ukraine's accession to NATO.
His position on Ukraine remains consistent, and he supports the provision of military and political assistance in the face of Russian aggression. It is expected that if Merz is elected chancellor, Germany will continue to support Ukraine in the international arena.
US President Donald Trump has suspended military aid. According to Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, without US assistance, it will be critical to maintain and supply missiles to the Patriot.
