Whether the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, will continue to fund the war against Ukraine depends heavily on the United States of America, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy states during a briefing.

"As for the US package, that’s a different story. We all need to work persistently together with the US so that at some point, when they are able, they impose the appropriate sanctions," Zelenskyy said.

He noted that this would greatly help accelerate the end of Russia’s war against Ukraine. Specifically, this refers to banking and energy sanctions.

"It very much depends on America whether Putin and the Russian army will continue to make money from this war," the president emphasized.

US sanctions against Russia

Recently, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the United States and Europe will decisively tighten sanctions against Russia if Russian President Vladimir Putin does not engage in peace talks with Ukraine "in a spirit of goodwill."

At the same time, US President Donald Trump said he would move forward with sanctions against Russia if the negotiations with Ukraine fail. In his opinion, the sanctions would be devastating for Russia.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also stated that Washington has given Moscow time to make progress in peace talks, but patience is running out — a decision on sanctions is already imminent.
