Your ticket to calm on the Bosphorus: 5 reasons to fly to Istanbul right now
Why visiting Istanbul in May is the best idea (photo: Getty Images)
May is probably the only month when Istanbul doesn’t try to exhaust you. The city has already woken up, everything is blooming, but you’re not yet melting from the heat.
RBC-Ukraine explains why May is the best month to travel to Istanbul and what can help you reset there in just three days.
Weather: when sneakers are your best friend
In May, Istanbul is perfect: stable +20 to +23°C (68–73°F). It’s the kind of weather where you can walk around all day in a T-shirt without searching for air conditioning every half hour. The air is still fresh, and the evenings smell like sea and flowers.
Small tip: Istanbul is a windy city. Even if it’s hot on land, on a ferry you can get chilled within five minutes. Always keep a light jacket or hoodie in your backpack. You’ll thank yourself later when you’re drinking tea on the deck.
Why May is better than summer
Istanbul is never empty, but now it hasn’t yet turned into a beehive.
Queues: You can actually enter Hagia Sophia or Galata Tower without spending half your life waiting.
Space: In narrow streets like Karaköy or Balat, you can still take photos without ten random people in the frame.
Smells: The city smells like jasmine and fresh pastries, not overheated concrete.
The Bosphorus, seagulls, and pure zen
Istanbul must be seen from the water. Period. In May, the Bosphorus is incredibly blue, and the sky is clear without summer haze.
What you must do:
- Go to Kadıköy. This is the Asian side. It has the best breakfasts, where you’ll be served dozens of small dishes with everything imaginable.
- Buy simit. This sesame bagel for a few lira is the best investment. Eat half yourself, and feed the other half to seagulls from the ferry. It’s a local ritual of psychotherapy.
- Get lost in Balat. A district with colorful houses. In May, it’s easier to walk uphill, and every courtyard looks like a ready Instagram shot.
A short reset
Istanbul can become a place where you simply exhale. Just 3–4 days, and you return a completely different person. Instead of anxiety in the background — the sound of waves; instead of rush — calm conversations in cafés.
Why it’s worth it:
- Budget: Hotels haven’t yet reached peak summer prices.
- Beauty: Istanbul is in full bloom. It looks very alive.
- Ease: No complicated plans needed. Just comfortable shoes and a ticket.
Istanbul in May is not about sightseeing for the sake of it. It’s about feeling life fully while the city is still fresh, gentle, and very welcoming.
