X appoints representative to unblock social network in Brazil - Reuters
Recently, the social media platform X was blocked in Brazil. However, the company, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, has now appointed a legal representative in the country, according to Reuters.
On Friday, Andre Zonaro and Sergio Rosenthal, who were recently appointed as X's lawyers in Brazil, informed Reuters that their colleague, Rachel de Oliveira Conceição, was selected as the company's legal representative and that they presented her name to the Supreme Court.
This step will fulfill one of the Supreme Court's requirements, allowing the company to continue operating in the country.
Reuters explains that Brazilian law requires foreign companies to appoint a legal representative within the country. This person would bear legal responsibility for the firm on a local level.
Until mid-August, X had a legal representative in Brazil, after which the company decided to close its offices in the country.
By the end of August, the Brazilian Supreme Court ruled that mobile and internet service providers must block X in the country. Users were disconnected from the social media platform for several hours after X failed to name a new legal representative.
This move followed a months-long dispute between Musk and Brazilian judge Alexandre de Moraes over the company’s failure to comply with court orders demanding that the platform take action against the spread of hate speech.
Previously, courts had blocked accounts involved in investigations related to the spread of disinformation and hate speech, which Musk condemned as censorship.
On Thursday, lawyers representing X in Brazil stated that the company had begun complying with orders to remove content, another requirement of the Supreme Court.
