US President's special envoy Steve Witkoff claims that Russian leader Vladimir Putin was always honest with him during their meetings. Witkoff made the statement in an interview with Fox News.
"He's (Vladimir Putin) never been anything other than straight with me, and I say that, and I get attacked, but that's an accurate statement," Witkoff said.
The US special envoy noted that he faced criticism for traveling to Moscow to meet with Putin eight times.
"How would you make a deal with someone on the other side unless you knew where the other person was coming from? I needed to understand what his motivations were, his goals, and so forth. And I actually think that a lot of those meetings now are becoming very relevant," he added.
Witkoff's meetings with Putin
Earlier, US President Donald Trump stated that his special envoy Steve Witkoff managed to establish common ground with both Russia and Ukraine.
According to Trump, Witkoff "is liked by Ukraine, Europe, and Russia."
As an example, the US leader recalled sending the special envoy to Moscow to meet Russian dictator Vladimir Putin for the first time.
Vitkoff has visited Moscow multiple times and met with Putin on several occasions.
Their most recent meeting took place on January 22. The talks also included Putin's aide, Yuri Ushakov, and his special envoy, Kirill Dmitriev.
