FIFA remained firm, and a single misstep could have cost the US the right to host the tournament.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has confirmed that the Iranian national team will be allowed to participate in the upcoming World Cup. Despite ongoing geopolitical tensions, Donald Trump has guaranteed the team safe entry into the United States, according to The Guardian.

Top-level assurances

Infantino held an official meeting with US President Donald Trump, focusing on preparations for the 2026 World Cup. After the talks, the FIFA chief stated that the US side would not obstruct the Iranian delegation.

“During the discussions, President Trump reiterated that the Iranian team is, of course, welcome to compete in the tournament in the United States,” Infantino said.

Previously, Iran’s participation had been uncertain due to military tensions in the Middle East.

Although Trump had previously downplayed the issue, stating he didn’t care whether Iran participated, he shifted to a diplomatic stance during the meeting with the FIFA president.

Iran’s schedule and logistics

The Iranian team will play all its group-stage matches in the United States.

  • Against Belgium and New Zealand in Inglewood, California

  • Against Egypt in Seattle

Interestingly, the tournament bracket could set up a USA vs. Iran match on July 3 in Dallas if both teams finish second in their groups.

FIFA stance on political pressure

Tournament COO Jaime Shirgi emphasized that the scale of the World Cup does not allow changes to the participant list due to global conflicts.

FIFA stresses that football should unite people, and denying entry to a qualified team could risk the US losing its hosting rights.

A similar precedent occurred three years ago when Indonesia lost the right to host the U-20 World Cup for refusing to accept the Israeli team.

To avoid sanctions or relocation of the tournament, the US must comply with FIFA regulations regardless of external political pressures.
