Why Russia massively targeting Ukraine's ports right now - expert explains the reason

Ukrainian ports on the Black Sea have come under a barrage of Russian strikes at the most critical time of the year for farmers. The details are outlined in RBC-Ukraine's article titled “Odesa ports go quiet: How Russia's attacks are putting Ukraine's trade at risk.”
Why did Russia choose this moment
The latest attacks on shipping come amid a broader escalation this summer. At the same time, they are taking place during the most important period for Ukrainian farmers.
According to military expert and former spokesperson for Ukraine’s General Staff Vladyslav Seleznov, Russia now has more resources available for such attacks.
“I think the Russians have increased the number of resources available for carrying out such attacks. They are increasingly using Banderyl drone missiles and jet-powered Shaheds, against which we have limited capabilities. Accordingly, the enemy is taking advantage of our weakness,” Seleznov said.
How are Ukrainian ports operating now
Despite the ongoing strikes, Ukraine’s maritime corridor remains operational. Ports continue to receive commercial vessels.
The Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority stressed that Ukraine has imposed no restrictions on the corridor’s operation.
The key factors determining whether shipowners are willing to enter Ukrainian ports remain:
- the security situation in the Black Sea;
- the level of protection of port infrastructure against air attacks;
- the protection of civilian shipping.
The Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority added that, together with the Defense Ministry, the Ministry for Restoration and the Defense Forces, it is taking measures to keep the corridor operational.
Despite the regular attacks, the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority reiterated that Ukraine has not imposed any restrictions on the operation of the Ukrainian maritime corridor.
Port operators continue to handle cargo, while the security situation remains the main factor influencing shipowners’ decisions to enter Ukrainian ports.
Meanwhile, RBC-Ukraine reported that the UN Security Council held an emergency meeting over a new wave of strikes on Black Sea ports.
The meeting highlighted the threat to global food security from rising wheat prices, as well as the dozens of sailors who have been injured in the attacks.
